The spicy margarita is a modern riff on the classic margarita, which dates back to Mexico in the late 1930s–1940s. As cocktail culture evolved in the late 20th and early 21st centuries—especially in the U.S.—bartenders began experimenting with heat, inspired by Mexico’s long tradition of pairing chili with citrus and tequila. By the 2000s, muddled jalapeños, chili infusions, and chili-salt rims helped the spicy margarita become a staple on cocktail menus, blending classic roots with contemporary flair.
