The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest named cocktails in American history—and it wears that badge proudly.
Its roots go back to the early 1800s, when a “cocktail” had a very specific meaning: spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. That definition was even printed in an 1806 newspaper, and the Old Fashioned is basically that formula, untouched. Whiskey (originally often rye), a sugar cube, a few dashes of bitters, and a splash of water—nothing fancy.
As the 19th century rolled on, bartenders started experimenting with liqueurs, absinthe, and fruit syrups. Not everyone was thrilled. By the 1880s, drinkers who wanted things done the traditional way began ordering their whiskey cocktails made the “old-fashioned” way—and the name stuck.
The drink survived Prohibition, mid-century muddled fruit excesses, and eventually enjoyed a revival in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as cocktail culture rediscovered simplicity and balance. Today, the Old Fashioned is a symbol of classic bartending: minimal, sturdy, and timeless—proof that if something works, you don’t need to mess with it.
